Favorite makeup brushes

Savvy Tip: Invest in good makeup brushes

There are so many makeup brushes out there and they can get pricey if you want to obtain high quality ones for your face, eyes, and lips.  I wanted to create a list of the essential brushes for everyday use so I called my best friend to discuss.   We have many different brushes between us and we agreed that we don’t need most of them.  While we are both fans of MAC brushes for their high quality at low cost, we find that the Sephora Pro smudge and blush/contour brushes to be the best in those categories.  Here are our top 5 makeup brushes that we can’t live without and they’ve held up very well over the years.  We hope you find them useful too!

  1. Mac Brush #208 Angled Brow Brush.  We love this as an eyeliner and brow brush.
  2. Mac Brush #242 Shader Brush: An eye shadow brush but works even better as a concealer brush.
  3. Mac Brush #224 Tapered Blending Brush: A really soft brush that’s great for applying and blending eye shadow.
  4. Sephora Pro Natural Dome Smudge Brush #13:  Great for putting a thick layer of eye shadow on the lash line.  A fantastic tool for doing smokey eyes.
  5. Sephora Pro Blush Brush #49 is awesome for contouring and highlighting.

How to give yourself a facial at home

While facials are great for our skin, most of us don’t have the time or money to indulge ourselves to these day spa treatments on a regular basis.  Luckily there are lots of products out there that can help us do a little pampering at home.  All you need is to set aside a few minutes once a week to give yourself a quick facial to maintain a healthy looking skin. This quick skincare routine will make you feel better and help keep your skin glowing between professional facials.

Before you begin, gather your cleanser, exfoliator (sugar & petroleum jelly too if exfoliating lips), washcloth, mask, and moisturizer.  Then get prepared by covering your hair with a shower cap or tying your hair back to keep it off your face.

1. Cleanse

Remove all makeup with your favorite facial cleanser and warm water. For years I have been using Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser because it effectively removes all makeup in a single step. It’s a gentle cleanser that would remove mascara and all eye makeup. For a deep clean, I’d recommend the Clarisonic face brushes with a gentle facial cleanser to clean and help improve blood circulation.

2. Exfoliate

Face: Use your favorite face scrub with fine round beads to remove dead skin cells and give your skin a smooth glowing skin. I love La Mer The Refining Facial as it exfoliates and refines my pores in one step revealing new smooth and radiant looking skin.

Lip: To get rid of the flakes on the lips, simply mix equal parts sugar and petroleum jelly like Vaseline in your palm, slather it on and rinse with warm water then apply a layer of your favorite lip balm afterward.

3. Open Pores

Without a steamer like most spas, I just soak a washcloth with warm water, ring out the towel then press it on my face. I repeat this 2 to 3 times, splash my face with cool water then pat dry.

4. Apply Mask

Apply a good amount of mask that is best suited for your skin type to all areas of your face but avoid your eyes. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes or for the instructed time then rinse with warm water. I often don't find myself applying a mask but still want a spa-like treatment so I turn to Kate Sommerville Dermal Quench Liquid Lift serum for its ability to deliver much-needed oxygen to hydrate my skin. This oxygen serum makes my skin feel instantly refreshed and hydrated unlike anything I've used before.

5. Moisturize

Massage in your favorite face moisturizer in a circular motion to improve blood circulation and hydrate your skin.

Best sunscreen for your face

La Mer The SPF 30 UV Protecting Fluid

I’ve tried many brands of sunscreen over the years but this is by far my favorite.  This La Mer protecting fluid goes on smoothly over my daily moisturizer giving me a luminous appearance.  It’s ideal as a makeup primer as it’s a lightweight and transparent fluid.  I love it that it isn‘t greasy, it doesn’t give a “white cast” shadow after application, and it smells great.  Plus it’s great for sensitive skin and doesn’t sting your eyes with sweat or water like other sunscreens.  I‘ve tried less expensive brands but this will always be the one I reach for in the morning.  I love everything about it but the price of this bottle. Luckily it would easily last for about 6 months or more.   It’s pricey but protecting your skin with the products that you love during the summer months is essential in keeping your skin looking great and healthy.

Super absorbent hair towel for healthier hair

Sephora Microfiber Hair Turban

Are you tired, literally, of wrapping a wet and heavy towel that slips and slides off your head after your shower?  This hair turban is a life saver for long hair.  To use, I simply flip my head down, drape the turban over my hair, gather all my hair into it, give it a twist and secure it with the keyhole loop and button.  The all-around elastic keeps the turban secure and the sturdy keyhole is strong enough that it doesn’t loosen the hold while getting dressed and doing my makeup.  Since it is made of super absorbent microfiber, it’s lightweight and it cuts down on blow drying time and small enough that you can travel with it.

Get clean hair "pronto"

Pronto Dry Shampoo by Oscar Blandi

Oscar Blandi dry shampoo is my current favorite quick fix for dirty hair.  To use, I just sprinkle a tiny amount on the root area and rub it in with my fingers to absorb the oil, remove the dirt and boost volume.  Within a minute my hair feels clean and smells freshly shampooed without product build-up and residue.   I highly recommend Pronto Dry shampoo for use in between washings, in a rush or when traveling.
